Bridgewater Mayor Lays Out Reasons For Paid Parking

Bridgewater’s Mayor has spent a lot of time answering questions on social media lately.

Many people were asking why paid parking meters have returned to the downtown core.

David Mitchell says he wanted to clear up some misconceptions about what it takes to provide parking.

“There’s no such thing as free parking. Somebody has to pay for it. In the Town of Bridgewater, if the parking was free, the cost to the taxpayer would be $67,000.”

Mitchell says the town leases two lots and have to maintain them.

If they didn’t charge for parking, the burden would fall to businesses, building owners or taxpayers.

Mitchell says paid parking also allows the thousands of non-residents who come into the town during the day to cover their fair share of the costs.
