Bridgewater Moving Ahead With Amalgamation Study

It was a unanimous decision by the town of Bridgewater.

Council voting in favour of notifying the town of Mahone Bay and Municipality of Lunenburg to further explore amalgamation.

Mayor David Walker says the best time to look at amalgamation is now.

“We believe that this is a process that makes sense, it’s logical for us to now proceed on. Times are changing, municipal government has to change with those times.”

Bridgewater joins Mahone Bay in favour of the move – while Chester and the town of Lunenburg aren’t interested at this time.

The Municipality of Lunenburg is expected to discuss the issue at its meeting this evening.

A favourable decision by MODL would allow the UARB to begin its work to see if amalgamation could work between the three units.

There would be a study complete as well as public meetings to answer questions from residents.

It will be finished before the 2016 municipal elections.
