The Town of Bridgewater is preparing to make a long-term investment in it’s bus service.
The buses that are currently being used were donated by Halifax at the end of their service life.
At their last meeting, council planned to set aside a half a million dollars to buy a new bus.
Mayor David Mitchell says that doesn’t mean they will spend that money.
“So we have not made any decisions other than, do we need a bus? Yes. Should we talk about it at budget time? Yes. Then lets get some funding in the meantime.”
Mitchell says they’re hoping to purchase a low-floor kneeling bus.
“It’s better for the driver, it’s better for the passengers, it’s better for those with mobility issues. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to buy one. That will absolutely be determined on funding.”
Mitchell expects the federal and provincial governments will be supportive as they’ve both identified public transportation as priorities.
But says if the other levels of government don’t come up with expected funding, council could look at buying a less expensive model.
