Bridgewater “Pumps The Brakes” On Parking Enforcement

The Town of Bridgewater is living on the honour system.

Paid parking is technically back in the downtown area, but there is no bylaw enforcement officer to issue tickets.

Mayor David Mitchell says there are still a few steps to take before they’re ready to put one in place.

“Council is now kind of in a holding pattern because we have more questions. We’ve heard from merchants who have some concerns and so, what we’re doing now is just, sort of, pump the breaks on this, we’re going to have another discussion.”

He says it all comes down to whether they’re going to reinstate the parking levy for downtown businesses.

“The bylaw enforcement officer is paid by the revenue from parking and if we decide to not charge for parking then we will not have a bylaw enforcement officer, we’ll probably go back to a commissionaire or someone who can just write tickets. Those are the questions we have to answer.”

Mitchell says council still needs to decide whether more meters will be added to King Street or if a parking kiosk would be a better fit with the new esthetic downtown.

He says he expects the issue to come back to council in June.
