Tears were shed Thursday as Bridgewater remembered one of its own. Hundreds of people along with students from Bridgewater Elementary and Junior-Senior High School, police officers, politicians and legion members paid their respects to Corporal Paul Davis. He died in Afghanistan in 2006. A plaque was unveiled in Davis’ honour. His father, Jim, recalls flying to Winnipeg to see his son for the final time. He says, “I’ll never forget his smile when we said goodbye to each other. He was getting ready to board his plane, I don’t know who broke the stare first, me or him, I think I turned my head away. I got in my cab, put my head in my hands and I cried.” He says he thinks about that moment often. The plaque and a red maple tree are in the school’s courtyard to remember the fallen soldier.
