A decision to send grade 10-12 students from Bridgewater Junior-Senior High to Park View Education Centre has the town exploring its options.
The South Shore Regional School Board approved the recommendation at their September 28 meeting.
Bridgewater town council is holding a special meeting to debate and determine whether to file an application to hold a judicial review of the school board’s decision.
Mayor David Walker says there needs to be better consultation and more information provided to the public.
“That it’s not just about moving grades 10-12 to Park View. It’s about a complete reorganization or revamping of the delivery of education within this school board.”
Walker adds, there needs to be better consultation with the public before a decision is made.
He says the meeting needs to be held before the new council and school board are sworn-in next month.
The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at town hall, is open to the public.
Meanwhile, Board Chair Jennifer Naugler says their focus is on the transition team and preparing students to transfer schools as early as next fall.
She says the governing board has made its decision and has to refer back to the Education Act.
“Which states under ministerial regulations ‘ a decision of a school board made in accordance with these regulations is final and should not be altered by anyone including the minister.’ “
Naugler understands the school board’s decision is emotional and takes time to understand.
She adds, the board is confident in their choice and is moving forward.
