Bunnies Being Abandoned In Barrington

Some kind-hearted people in Shelburne County are trying to give unwanted rabbits a home.

The problem of abandoned bunnies has been getting worse in the Barrington area according to Shelley Boutilier.

She and her husband and other like-minded individuals are trying to stop the practice and save the rabbits from being food for coyotes and other animals.

Boutiler doesn’t think people are being intentionally cruel.

She says people get rabbits as pets then become overwhelmed.

“The bunnies that had been bought last year or the year before, not understanding how quickly the bunnies breed, the person is overrun so now they’re just throwing them out which is really sad because now they’re just prey.”

Boutilier says the unwanted bunnies are being dumped just about anywhere as she discovered recently.

“A white bunny was standing in the road looking at me on her hind feet. Since then the drops have become numerous I can go in the morning and there’ll be six bunnies, by afternoon, there will be 10 bunnies.”

She says she and her friends will try and find homes for unwanted rabbits.
