Burying Power Infrastructure Is Utility’s Responsibility

As the province recovers from the effects of Hurricane Dorian, people are now looking to see how to minimize the impacts of storms.

Premier Stephen McNeil says after a major storm event like Dorian residents often wonder why utilities don’t bury their cables.

“I do know in some places, in new neighbourhoods, new subdivisions they are burying some of their infrastructure.”

The Premier says the power industry is regulated and therefore the cost of moving the lines underground would be put on the ratepayers.

McNeil says industry will need to assess their own infrastructure to determine if they would want to move that idea forward.
