Caledonia Students To Commemorate D-Day Anniversary

On the eve of the 75th anniversary of D-Day a local high school class is doing their part to remember those who served.

Just a few weeks ago the North Queens Community School’s Grade 9 Citizenship Education Class was raising money to replace the Caledonia cenotaph’s flag pole after it snapped in a wind storm in April.

Teacher Julie Ramey says after the pole fell, the students started to look into who was responsible for maintaining the cenotaph to see if they could lend a helping hand.

“They made some phone calls and started to talk about who was responsible for that and how they could go about helping and really discovered there is no one person or group that oversees that now that we no longer have a local legion,” says Ramey.

After investigating the area, the students discovered the pole had actually rotted, precipitating the pole’s collapse.

“So they volunteered to do the work, worked with some of the local folks to get an idea of what would need to be done and what would need to be sourced and started to collect money and donations,” says Ramey.

The students raised $1,900 for the new pole and to beautify the are surrounding the cenotaph.

The class has also taken it upon themselves to host a D-Day anniversary service, which takes place at the cenotaph at 1:50 p.m.

The ceremony will take place rain or shine and the class is encouraging attendees to wear Canadian colours.

Singer/songwriter Terry Kelly will perform and a CP-140 Aurora will conducted a flyby at 2 p.m. From CFB Greenwood.
