Have you heard of snow farming? It’s when you keep snow all summer long! Ski hills all over the world do it to get a head start on the next season, but it’s never been done in Nova Scotia until now. Ski Martock is giving it a try.
They have a giant pile of snow from this season and are covering it with a special insulated tarp. The idea is that it will last all summer without melting. As I said, other places do this, but usually they are at higher elevations, so this will be interesting to see. You might think this is very weird, but before refrigeration, people kept ice all year round by insulating it in sawdust!
They explain their plan here. By the way Martock is celebrating it’s 60th year!
