Shipbuilding in Canada is about to take another tack.
Minister of Public Services and Procurement Judy M. Foote announced today the federal government will streamline its shipbuilding strategy.
The Canadian Navy will not design its new fleet of ships.
A review conducted last year determined an existing design could be converted for the Navy’s purposes at a better price than designing a ship from scratch.
By using an existing design, steel could start to be cut on the navy ships two years sooner than expected.
Minister Foote says the project will create 2,400 shipbuilding jobs in Halifax over the next 20 – 25 years.
Design submissions for the new ships will be accepted after a request for proposals is released later this summer.
