Canada joins Eurovision

Canada is officially joining one of the world’s biggest and most unique music competitions.

In a surprise announcement made on Canada Day, CBC/Radio-Canada and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed that Canada will compete in the Eurovision Song Contest beginning in 2027. The move follows CBC/Radio Canada becoming a full member of the EBU, making Canada the first new country to join the competition since 2015.

What Is Eurovision?

For those unfamiliar with it, the Eurovision Song Contest is much more than a singing competition.

Every year, countries from across Europe, and now beyond, send an artist or group to perform an original song in front of a massive international audience. Known for its elaborate stage productions, unforgettable costumes, pyrotechnics, and occasionally bizarre performances, Eurovision has become a global phenomenon.

The contest has helped launch the careers of countless artists and attracts millions of viewers worldwide.

Canadians Already Love Eurovision

While Canada’s official participation is new, the country’s connection to Eurovision is not.

According to organizers, Canadians have become some of the competition’s most enthusiastic fans. Last year, Canada ranked among the top three countries participating in the “Rest of the World” vote, and Canadians were among the largest groups of ticket buyers from outside Europe.

Many Canadian fans even travelled overseas to attend the semi-finals and grand final in person.

A Familiar Canadian Connection

Perhaps the most famous Canadian Eurovision story belongs to Céline Dion.

In 1988, before she became an international superstar, Dion won Eurovision while representing Switzerland. The victory is often credited as one of the major stepping stones in her journey to global stardom.

Other Canadians have also graced the Eurovision stage over the years, including Natasha St-Pier, who represented France in 2001, and La Zarra, who represented France in 2023.

Now, for the first time, a Canadian artist will have the opportunity to compete under the Canadian flag.

What Happens Next?

The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest will follow the 2026 competition in Bulgaria and will mark the first appearance by Canada as an official participant.

The big question now becomes: Who will represent Canada?

With Canada’s rich musical history and diverse talent pool, there is already plenty of speculation about what kind of artist and song could make a splash on one of the world’s largest music stages.

A New Opportunity for Canadian Music

For Canadian musicians, Eurovision represents a unique platform to reach audiences across Europe and around the globe. For fans, it’s a chance to cheer on a homegrown act while taking part in one of music’s most entertaining traditions.

Whether you’re a longtime Eurovision devotee or someone who’s never watched before, one thing is certain: when 2027 arrives, Canada will officially be part of the show.

And if Eurovision’s history has proven anything, it’s that absolutely anything can happen once the music starts.
