Canada Post Seeks Injunction To Prevent Protests Outside Nova Scotian Offices

A labour group is concerned after discovering Canada Post is seeking an injunction to prevent people from picketing outside their Nova Scotian buildings.

Suzanne MacNeil, president of the Halifax Dartmouth District Labour Council, says she is sending legal council to Halifax Supreme Court to argue on their behalf.

“We wanted to avoid a situation where people would be prohibited from doing otherwise legal activity,” says MacNeil.

Six people were arrested last week after blocking entrances to Canada Post offices on Almon Street in Halifax.

MacNeil’s husband Tony Tracy, of the Canadian Labour Congress, was one of those arrested.

They’re facing charges of mischief and obstructing a peace officer.

Several labour organizations have picketed Canada Post since the federal government legislated postal employees back to work.

According to the court docket, the Canada Post Corporation is seeking an injunction to prevent “John Doe, Jane Doe, and all other persons trespassing, picketing, or watching and bestting or obstructing at or near the premises of” Canada Post in Nova Scotia.

The case will be before Halifax Supreme Court at 1 p.m. today.
