Canada’s New Space Launch Pad

There’s a pretty big development happening right here in Atlantic Canada, and it’s something that could change Canada’s role in space.

The federal government has announced a $200 million investment to support a space launch pad near Canso, Nova Scotia. The goal is to help build out what could eventually become a full-scale spaceport, something Canada has never had before.

Right now, Canada doesn’t actually have its own way to launch satellites into space. Instead, we rely on other countries, most often companies like SpaceX, to get things into orbit. This new launch site would change that, giving Canada more control over when and how its satellites are launched.

And that matters more than people might think. About 20% of Canada’s economy relies on satellites, everything from banking systems and GPS to communication networks. So having our own launch capability isn’t just about space exploration, it’s about security, independence, and keeping up with a rapidly growing industry.

The site itself is being developed by Maritime Launch Services, and if everything stays on track, the launch pad could be operational by 2028.

It’s still early days, but it’s a big step toward Canada becoming a more independent player in space, and it’s happening right here on the East Coast.
