Canadian Federation Of Students Has Concerns With New Memorandum Of Understanding

Students will be paying more tuition over the next four years.

The Canadian Federation of Students say this is the result of terms of the recently signed memorandum of understanding between government and universities.

The province will increase school funding by one percent per year over the next four years.

With inflation at 1.5%, CFS Chairperson Charlotte Kiddell says, that doesn’t even keep up.

“So not only are schools underfunded now, but will continue to receive less funding effectively with the terms of this MOU over the next four years.”

Kiddell says Nova Scotia students pay the highest tuition rates in the country.

She also says, government needs to do more to address sexual violence on university campuses.

Kiddell says the MOU between the province and universities doesn’t keep government promises.

She says the MOU puts the onus to create a sexual violence policy on the university, but students have no recourse if their school doesn’t follow through.

“The MOU expires every few years. Sexual violence does not expire every few years unfortunately. So we need to see this addressed in more concrete and permanent legislation.”

Kiddell is encouraged government wants to make campuses safer, but says more must be done.
