Canadian Sledge Team Staying Fit At High Performance Camp

A member of the national sledge hockey team says all players are in top shape ahead of their next competition.

Greg Westlake made his debut with the Canadian national team in 2003.

He’s participating in Hockey Canada’s high performance training camp at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre.

Westlake says the team is preparing for next month’s World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Charlottetown.

“It’s pretty obvious the guys spent their summer putting in the work so it’s pretty exciting when you can get 18-20 guys all on the same page, all working hard and I think we’re going to have a pretty good team this year.”

The camp features two practices a day plus off-ice training.

Westlake says the team takes pride in working hard to try and achieve their goal of winning a gold medal next month.

“We’re a fit team right now. I think we are, on average, about 10 percent more fit than we were at the start of last year.”

Canada lost to the U.S. in the final of the last challenge in Bridgewater last January.

The camp runs until Tuesday.
