Cape St. Mary’s Lighthouse Gets Heritage Designation

(Photo: lighthousefriends.com)

Since 1868, the Cape St. Mary’s Lighthouse has been a guide into St. Mary’s Bay.

It is now a heritage lighthouse. The designation was made by the federal government.

The 13-metre Cape St. Mary’s Light was built for $226.

Among the 90 heritage lighthouses, 42 are to be managed by the federal government and 48 are to be managed by new, non-federal owners.

Many community-based organizations and other levels of government are currently working with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to take over responsibility for the care and protection of many more lighthouses that are important to their communities.
