Cars And Deer, A Deadly Combination This Time Of Year

Deer migration and mating season generally runs from October through December which causes an increase in deer movement in the fall.

Constable Ted Mugford of the Lunenburg District RCMP warns drivers should be particularly alert at this time of year, especially on Highway 103.

“They’re unpredictable,” said Mugford.

“We get car, deer motor vehicle accidents pretty much anywhere in the county you can think of. We even had one of our own members driving and a deer jumped out and struck the police car in front of the hospital in Bridgewater, of all places,” said Mugford.

Mugford suggests after-market auxillary lights installed on your vehicle that help to illuminate the side of the road, giving you extra lead time if you spot a deer, can be helpful.

“But the most practical way to avoid a collision is to slow down and continually scan both sides of the road.”
