Changes To Child Care Subsidy Program Benefits Families Across Nova Scotia

Childcare is getting more affordable.

Changes to Nova Scotia’s Child Care Subsidy Program is making it easier for families to afford and access child care.

Shelley Thompson Thompson says the biggest change is the Turning Point, which is the amount of money the family makes on an annual basis.

She says a family making $35,000 a year could see up to $29 per day covered.

This means 550 more children will be eligible to receive the maximum subsidy.

“It also means that for families between $35,000 and $70,000, they will move a little bit up on the sliding scale so that all families in the program are going to receive more money towards their child care bill.”

The program will make childcare more accessible and affordable for roughly 1,600 eligible children.

Another change is subsidy becoming available to families accessing part-day child care.

Shelley Thompson with Education and Early Childhood Development says they will be able to support an additional 375 children.

She says it helps families go to work or stay in school.

“It’s a really good investment in child development to have children going into regulated, quality pre-school programs.”

Last month the province signed a three-year, $35 million early learning and child care funding agreement with the federal government.

A portion of the funding is helping support these program changes.

The changes took effect Feb. 1st.
