Chester Food Bank Waiting For Answers From Municipality

Food bank administrators in Chester feel they’re stuck in limbo.

Chairperson Wendy Sheppard says when the municipality was planning to move their offices to the former Gold River school, they were given notice to vacate the annex building.

She says the food bank sent a letter to council asking to stay after renovations at the school were cancelled due to ballooning costs.

“They decided they still don’t know what they’re doing,” she says.”So they’re not willing to give us an answer. As it stands right now, we still need to vacate by the end of May”

Sheppard says a move could significantly impact how well they serve those in need.

Meanwhile, Warden Allen Webber says they’re still working on a plan.

“We’ve left the eviction notice, I guess, in place,” he says “because at this moment in time we’re uncertain as to whether were going to need to utilize that building for our own needs now that we’re not going to Gold River.”

Webber says they’ve offered financial assistance to the food bank if they need to move.

He says he expects the municipality to make a final decision by the end of the month.
