Chester: Minor Hockey Association, Municipality Search For Ice Time

The Chester Minor Hockey Association is reaching out to find ice time for its players.

The Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Arena is expected to be closed for a month due to structural problems with its roof.

President Chris Hayes says safety has to come first.

“Hopefully, if we reach out to other organizations that we’ve helped in the past, that they will share their ice with us and that will allow us to compensate over the next couple of weeks.”

Ice time requests have been made to arenas in Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Liverpool, Tantallon, Hammonds Plains and in the Annapolis Valley.

The rink closure also effects South Shore, West Hants and TASA minor hockey teams. However, the curling rink, attached to the same building, remains open.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Chester hasn’t decided if it will cover the cost difference for teams to switch arenas due to the closure.

Warden Allen Webber says he expects the issue to be discussed among council.

Webber adds, it’s likely some people will have to travel up to an hour for ice time.

“All parties are working to limit inconvenience to the users as much as possible, but it’s inevitable there will be some.”

The building will remain closed to the public until repairs are complete.
