Work has been halted at the former Gold River-Western Shore Elementary school.
The Municipality of Chester council voted 6-1 in favour of terminating the renovation project.
Warden Allen Webber says a budget increase to $1.5-million was too rich for a majority of members.
“It wasn’t as economical as we thought and therefore we have to re-evaluate what makes the most sense financially moving forward.”
The municipality spent roughly $260,000 on renovations as well as engineering and consulting costs.
Webber says it is too soon to say what will happen with the annex Building, food bank, and the school itself.
Council will work on next steps in the near future.
