Chester may never have to build another landfill.
The Municipality has reached an agreement with Sustain Technologies Inc. to build a facility which will divert 90% of garbage out of landfills.
The facility will be the first of its kind in Canada.
Warden Allen Webber breaks down the process.
“They’ll turn our black bag garbage into a bio-mass pellet. And they have a contract with Emera to use that fuel source to provide fuel for Emera’s plant in Brooklyn-Queens County.”
Sustane Technologies is investing $16 million dollars in the facility which will create 25 new jobs.
Webber says the process will revolutionize waste disposal.
“Hopefully it will lead to the elimination of landfilling as a necessity for dealing with waste.”

Initially Sustane just wanted to but the municipality’s waste but was convinced to build the facility in Chester.
Construction will begin this fall and the facility will be in operation by late 2017.
