Community Rallies To Provide Christmas Dinners

Hundreds of families on the South Shore will enjoy Christmas dinner due to the kindness of strangers.

For the past eight years, Jonathan Lewis has recruited friends and businesses to donate their time and money to provide frozen turkeys, cooked chickens and all the trimmings.

Lewis says, this year they will distribute over 400 meals.

Mahone Bay, Liverpool and Lunenburg already received their dinners before Bridgewater residents picked theirs up last night.

“Knock on wood, we’ve never run out. Last year I think we were short two people. And then my wife and I ran out personally and bought them groceries and took it to them. But for the most part, we always seem to hand out the last bag of groceries to the last person.”

A couple weeks ahead of Christmas, Lewis and his team find families who could use some help.

“I think it just helps raise people’s spirits to know someone cares and is willing to sit on their doorstep on a cold winter night and shoot the breeze with them.”

He says Christmas is an amplifier, whether you’re blessed or struggling.

And he encourages donors to bring meals to families in person in hopes of bringing people together at Christmas.
