Contaminants To Be Removed, Boat Launch Will Go Ahead

Boaters in Lunenburg will have an easier time getting into the harbour.

Town council gave the go ahead to complete the work needed to remediate contaminated soil from the Broad Street launch.

Safely disposing of the soil is adding an extra $80,000 on top of the $160,000 the launch was projected to cost.

Mayor Rachel Bailey says they couldn’t ignore the issue

“We just really have to make sure that there’s no future repercussions from moving what is there. That’s actually, just a very costly operation to ensure that protection.”

Bailey says over the past hundred years, environmental standards weren’t what they are today.

“We’re really not in a position to put blame or to ask anybody else to take responsibility for what happens to be there at this point in time.”

Bailey says work on the launch should be complete around the end of the month.
