A contest is underway to help groups save their lighthouses.
‘This Lighthouse Matters’ was launched by the National Trust for Canada and the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society.
People can vote once a day on a lighthouse near their community – with a chance to win top prizes between $25,000 and $75,000.
Community groups have had to maintain them since 2010 after Ottawa declared most of Nova Scotia’s lighthouses as surplus.
Four South Shore beacons are among the competition including the Sandy Point Lighthouse in Shelburne, the Battery Point Lighthouse in Lunenburg, as well as the Spectacle Island and Medway Head Lighthouses in Queens.
The contest runs until mid-July.
