DNR Helps People Prevent Black Bear Wake Up Call

Yogi and Booboo are on the hunt for a snack and they might have an eye on your yard.

Peter MacDonald, a Department of Natural Resources Biologist, says your compost bin could attract bears still hungry winter.

“Most of our bear problems are people caused problems. If you have something that’s attracting bears to your property then you really need to address that. Once that’s removed the bear problem is usually gone.”

MacDonald says even a barbecue in need of a cleaning is enough to lead a bear to your door.

He says most bears are naturally afraid of humans.

But he adds there isn’t enough natural food this early in the season which could make your property too good to pass up.
