Another group is working to attract doctors to the South Shore.
NOW Lunenburg County and Doctors Nova Scotia will hold a public meeting in Mahone Bay this week to speak with residents on how to recruit and retain family doctors in the area.
A meeting between physicians and Doctors Nova Scotia in November laid out some of what doctors are looking for.
Organizer Lynn Hennigar says locals need to be thinking about what they can do to make the region attractive.
“How do we make people in general, but doctors specifically, feel welcome here? So how do we get them to volunteer, how do we make sure their spouses have jobs or meaningful work, how do we help [them] just integrate into the community?”
Kevin Chapman with Doctors Nova Scotia says this kind of effort is exactly what needs to happen in communities across the province.
However, Chapman says their organization doesn’t want to pit Nova Scotians against each other.
“We don’t want to introduce competition. But what we want to do is have groups like NOW Lunenburg to set that benchmark where every community then starts to look and say, ‘How do we support recruitment?’”
The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday evening at the Mahone Bay Legion.
A week from tonight, we’ll be having a conversation with the community to build a strategy to attract Doctors to LC. We invite you all to be part of the solution. pic.twitter.com/vfm7QUzLyr
