Early Fire Detection System for Landfill on Chester’s Radar

A landfill fire is not unusual but the Municipality of Chester is looking to learn more about them, sooner.

Municipal council is reviewing the possibility of installing early fire detection equipment at Kaizer Meadow Landfill.

Warden Allen Webber says it would be an added benefit.

“If we could catch it before it actually ignited with some form of heat detection or whatever that may save a lot of time for fire departments, it may save some money and reduce the risk.”

The most recent landfill fire May 10 burned approximately 1,200 square metres of cell 4A at a depth of 30-60 centimetres.

There were no injuries and the site returned to full operation the next day.

The cause is undetermined.

Webber says staff will look at systems that other Maritime landfills are using, what works best and their value.
