Eighth Annual Wild For Waterfowl Bird Count

Some people count sheep, others count birds.

The eighth annual Port Joli Wild for Waterfowl migratory bird count is tomorrow.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is getting help from science citizens to help collect data on migratory and threatened bird species.

Doug Van Hemessen with the Nature Conservancy says Port Joli is part of a designated bird area.

“Especially for wintering waterfowl, so every year we go in this time of year and see who’s hanging out with the waterfowl and other birds we might see” he says.

“That gives us an idea of how many are likely to be staying for the winter.”

Van Hemessen says this lets us know if we’re seeing more or fewer birds each year.

He also says it helps develop conservation planning and management.

“Where conservation efforts might be stronger in terms of why we need to do more protection in this area, or we need to do whatever may be necessary to ensure that the birds are happy to be there and they’ll continue to be there.”

The count starts at 10 tomorrow morning and will take place between Sable River and Port Mouton.
