Emergency Management Wants Residents To Be Prepared For All Scenarios

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

The Region of Queens Emergency Management Office wants residents to make sure they’re prepared in the event of flooding, winter storms or other emergencies.

Brian Hatt with EMO says the province has been fortunate so far when it comes to weather, but anticipates major storms later this winter.

He says they encourage people to stay inside, but anything can happen in an emergency.

“We can take extra measures to help keep them notified,” he says.

“But the first, try and stay in place for power outages till it comes back on and the roads are safe to travel on.”

Hatt says a basic emergency kit should be portable, and suggests keeping one in their car in the event of an emergency on the road.

He says things like emergency documents, a first aid kit and maps are some key things to have on-hand.

He also says to keep in contact with neighbours and the media.

“To get updates on what’s happening, and if there’s any notifications from the authorities as to what you might do or have to move.

According to EMO:

Residents will be updated as a potential emergency situation develops, and advised of situational status.

Among the methods utilized to communicate with the public regarding the status of a winter storm, or other situations at other times of year, are messages and updates to local media, including the local radio stations (CKBW – 94.5 FM, Hank FM – 100.7, and QCCR – 99.3 FM);

Posts on the Region of Queens Municipality’s website (http://www.regionofqueens.com); the Region of Queens Municipality Facebook page (htpp://www.facebook.com/RegionofQueens); and the Region of Queens Twitter page (https://www.twitter.com/RegionofQueens ).

During severe emergencies, door to door notification may also be utilized.
