Entrepreneurs Say Income Tax Changes Unfair To Small Business

Small business owners are calling foul over proposed income tax changes.

The federal government designed the changes to close tax loopholes which they say give some Canadians an advantage over others.

Katelyn Bourgoin runs a company called K-Bo Consulting which supports marketing start-ups.

She doesn’t like the way entrepreneurs are being portrayed by the Trudeau government.

“As though entrepreneurs are tax cheats and they’re very deliberate in trying to evade taxes.”

Government argues because of the way business owners can sprinkle income to family members, they aren’t paying their fair share.

Bourgoin’s company supports entrepreneurs and she says that doesn’t reflect what really happens.

“Income sprinkling is projected as though it’s a way for small business owners to avoid taxes. But in many cases, it was a way for them to compensate their partner, in many cases women, for their role in the business.”

Bourgoin says the changes will also impact people’s retirement income.

She says to increase their tax rate to 45 percent after a lifetime of planning, is unfair.

Bourgoin can’t understand how on one hand government is trying to encourage entrepreneurship but with the other they are working against those interests.

She is concerned this will discourage young people from beginning their own businesses and it could lead to a loss of talent in the province.
