Fall Colours

Like it or not, fall colours have started to appear. It almost seems a little early, but that might be just me. But at the same time, I love to see them.

Although I really don’t get how it works. I know the concept. The weather starts to cool, the trees start sucking the chlorophyll out of the leaves and storing it for another year to help save energy. What’s left is the stuff that caused the colours. I get that.

But how is it that a tree will turn and the one right next to it will stay green? What does one know that winter is coming and the other seems like it doesn’t care. And the ones that really confuse me are the trees that run colour on a few branches and stay green on others. So some branches didn’t get the memo?

It confuses me. And it’s hard to ask a tree a question. You can ask, but they tend to use very few words to respond.

In any case, whether I can figure it out or not, we’ve got some splashes of pretty nice colour starting to appear.

Peak leaf is one of those hard to find things. Mostly because as soon as we get close to all the leaves changing colour we get a storm and half of them blow away. You can still see them around your feet, but it’s not quite the same as seeing them still on the tree.

But if you are one of those who likes a family drive on Thanksgiving weekend to check out the foliage, this may be a pretty good year. At least, it’s shaping up that way so far.
