Fatal shooting under investigation in Amherst, N.S.

Amherst Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Prince Arthur Street.

Officers were called just before 7 p.m. on Monday after receiving reports of a loud bang and an injured man. An adult male was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Police say those responsible drove off in a vehicle. Investigators believe there is no further risk to the public.

The incident happened near a local homeless shelter. The Cumberland Homelessness and Housing Support Association (CHHSA) said in a Facebook post that the incident happened near its facility.

Sarah Flemming, Acting Chair CHHSA, writes “We are working closely with Amherst Police Department. Staff and guests of CHHSA were not involved in the incident, however are deeply impacted by the proximity to our shelter. We will do our best to keep our community informed as appropriate.”

The investigation remains ongoing, with Amherst Police and the Major Crime Unit continuing to gather evidence.
