Fire Closes King Street In Bridgewater – Updated 10:30am

Two buildings sustained serious damage during a fire on King Street in Bridgewater last night.

Around 10:30pm, fire crews from at least 8 departments were called to assist the Bridgewater Fire service in extinguishing a fire in the former Cleve’s Sporting Goods building at the intersection of King Street and Old Bridge Street.

Residents of two apartments had to be evacuated and four businesses in the two buildings have been displaced.

Bridgewater Fire Chief, Michael Nauss is grateful for the help nine other nearby fire services provided to help knock the fire down.

“I can tell you that we all work very well together and it’s great to think we have such a great mutual aid association that we can call on our neighbouring departments to help us when we’re in need.

Nauss says the cause is still under investigation.

“The fire moved very quickly throughout the whole building because of the age of the building, [a] balloon framing – structure type of building. Once it got the the exterior walls, it just went right up.”

It’s expected a section of King Street between Empire and Dufferin as well as the Old Bridge will be closed to traffic until mid-afternoon while crews clean up.
