First Nations’ National Chief Optimistic About New Liberal Government

First Nations groups in Canada are ready for the change in government.

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples National Chief Dwight Dorey says he’s hopeful Prime Minister Designate Trudeau will keep the promises he made during the campaign.

However, Dorey says before that work can begin they need to see new lines of communication put in place.

“First thing would be to establish a process,” he said, “where we can have dialogue and there were promises on that.”

A Nova Scotian himself, Dorey says the new MP’s have a lot of work to do.

“It’s about the quality of life we’re hoping to see improved,” he said. “It’s about narrowing the gap between the general population and the aboriginal population when it comes to social-economic issues.”

However, he says he understands it won’t happen over night.
