Last month a 26 year old former Mcdonald’s employee, Dessy Joseph talked on Tik Tok about her time spent working at Mcdonalds. And the post went viral.
But Dessy may have cleared up something I’ve always wondered about. It’s a hot day, and you feel like a Mcdonald’s ice cream cone or a McFlurry (invented in Atlantic Canada!!) And you’re told , not for the first time in your life, that the ice cream machine is broken.
It’s happened to me enough times and I’ve heard other people complain about the ice cream machine frequently being broken that I wondered how a billion dollar enterprise like Mcdonalds wouldn’t have replaced the thing with something that doesn’t break down.
Dessy’s explanation is that the machine is not broken. But when it needs refilling, it’s a really cumbersome process to replace the 5 pound bag of ice milk mix. You have to get on a ladder to switch out the bags, then it takes 15 to 20 minutes for the machine to freeze the mix. Dessy says some employees just don’t want to deal with it , especially during busy times, so they just say the machine is broken.
I’m not sure if this is true, but it makes a lot of sense to me.
Other tips include removing an ingredient from your order to get the freshest possible sandwich or burger – for example ask for no pickles. Ask to customize your order, and to save money, don’t remove an item then add another, instead ask them to “substitute” something for something.
Did you ever work at a fast food franchise? What was the most memorable thing about the job?
