Four candidates confirmed for by-election in Nova Scotia’s newest riding

The field is set for Nova Scotia’s newest provincial electoral district.

Elections Nova Scotia says nominations have closed for the June 23 by-election in Chéticamp-Margarees-Pleasant Bay, with four candidates officially entered in the race.

The candidates are:

  • Nik Boisvert, Green Party of Nova Scotia
  • Claude Bourgeois, Progressive Conservative Party
  • Denis Cormier, Nova Scotia Liberal Party
  • Trevor Poirier, Nova Scotia New Democratic Party

The by-election will elect the first MLA for the newly created riding, which was established earlier this year to improve representation for Acadian communities in western Cape Breton.

The addition of the riding increases the number of seats in the Nova Scotia Legislature from 55 to 56.

Before the by-election, the Progressive Conservatives hold 42 seats, the NDP hold nine, the Liberals hold three and there is one Independent MLA. The new riding means a total of 56 seats will now be represented once the election is complete.

Early voting is underway at the returning office in Grand Étang, while election day is scheduled for June 23.

Elections Nova Scotia says voters with questions about the by-election can contact the agency directly or visit its website for more information.
