Over the past few years, axe throwing has grown from a backyard pastime into a competitive sport with dedicated athletes, leagues, and international championships. What might seem unusual to some takes an incredible amount of skill, practice, and commitment. There are competitions at the local, national, and international level, and recently a team from Nova Scotia proved, yet again just how strong the sport has become here at home.
The 2026 World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championship was held in Bollnäs, Sweden, bringing together 96 athletes from 12 countries. Among them was Felicia Townsend of Barrington, Nova Scotia, along with teammates John Buchanan and Susie Atwood. Competing as Team 3’s Company, they earned an impressive silver medal in the men’s mixed team division.
John also won 5th best in the worlds for the men’s individual competition while Felisha won 4th in women’s individual!
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that they were the only team in the division with two women and one man. Despite competing against teams from around the world, they battled their way to a second-place finish on the world stage.
I chatted with Felisha about her passion for the sport and how it all started!
She also encourages people to check out local clubs or even stop by axe throwing bars in Halifax or Moncton!
