Furry Friend Helping Youth, Adults At Bridgewater Library

Reading is now a little bit more relaxing in Bridgewater.

Mara the golden retriever therapy dog is back at the Margaret Hennigar Public Library.

The four legged friend helps youth and adults develop their reading skills.

The dog’s owner Mary Catherine says Mara is a great addition.

“Her genetic makeup is such that she just loves being with people,” she says, “she’s very calm with all sorts of people, all ages and types. And that’s when I explored the idea and I got her certified for therapy work.”

Catherine says it helps readers being in a more relaxed environment but adds that it’s not just about the reading.

“It gives them a great experience with the dog, a very positive experience,” she says, “It’s just something that I think they remember, they associate fondly with the library and they’ll carry that with them.”

She says Mara has been a guide dog in the past, but is better suited in a therapy role.

Mara will be at the LCLC every Tuesday morning throughout the summer.
