One hundred years ago today, the Bluenose was launched. That’s ten dimes worth of birthdays.
The Bluenose was built to be fast, and also functional. It was a fishing vessel, but also a racing vessel. And it did what it was supposed to do. The Bluenose caught fish and won races.
The Bluenose deserved a better fate than sinking off of Haiti with a load of bananas, but we at least have the Bluenose II to remind us. And the dime. Although, apparently, the image on the dime is a composite of three different vessels. The government declared the image to be the Bluenose, so we’ll say it is.
You can help celebrate her birthday by checking the Bluenose 100 website. There are videos on there as a virtual celebration. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has made cake impossible. For a 1ooth birthday, there should be cake. With dimes baked into it.
