Hebbville Students Take On ‘Pink Tax’

Four Hebbville Academy students are taking on the issue of gender equality.

Cassandra Oakes, Ella Dexter, Allison Grant, and Lacey Meisner took a camera around the Bridgewater area and captured proof that women are paying more then men for common items.

The 13-year-old Oakes says this so called “pink tax” is clear discrimination.

“I found the clothing shocking, especially because they were right next to each other, and they had the prices listed and I think we were paying about a dollar more.”

The group presented what they’ve found to Bridgewater Council in hopes of gaining support.

Oakes says she’s not sure who can actually fix the problem but they want to start by making people aware.

Meanwhile, Councillor Cheryl Fougere was proud to see the young ladies taking on such a big issue.

“Good for them for coming in and sharing those great facts. It was very enlightening for me and, I think, for the rest of council.”

Fougere says the pink tax is something that needs to be dealt with both locally and on a national level.

She says she’s happy to do whatever she can to help.
