Settled onto the southern shores of Lake Major is Melancholy Mountain. Today, it’s a great option for a day trip out of the city to get some time in the woods. But what makes this 5k hike so special is the fascinating story behind it. Here’s a glimpse into Melancholy Mountain.
Finding the Trail
The Trailhead is at the end of Burnhope Drive in Montague Gold Mines. You’ll see it at the back end of the road’s cul-de-sac.
The Climb
The hike takes you through the woods for approximately 500 metres, at which point the trail intersects with power lines. Follow the trail to your right that runs underneath the lines.
It’s worth noting that this first section can be very muddy, so prepare for wet conditions!
Continue past the first tower, but as you approach the second tower, watch for a trail heading back into the woods on the left. This will take you back into the forest and through a beautiful clearing with exposed granite.
Follow it into the treeline on the other side of the clearing, where it’s a short climb (about 25 metres) to the top.
The Summit
The main lookoff point is a cylinder shaped outcropping that rises above the treeline. Looking back towards Dartmouth, you can see the iconic harbourside smokestacks, the McDonald Bridge, and the buildings beyond.
The adventure doesn’t have to end here. If you’re willing to tackle more challenging terrain, follow the flagging tape past the summit.
A 15-20 minute hike will lead you to a cross in the woods, which is where the mountain’s story starts.
