How Environment Canada Is Using AI to Improve Weather Forecasts

Before you get too upset, let me explain!

Environment Canada announced earlier this month that it will be using AI to help provide more accurate forecasts, especially when it comes to tracking large storms. Their new hybrid model will combine classic physics‑based weather forecasting with an AI tool that analyzes historical data and looks for how current weather patterns align with the past to help predict the future.

They say this new hybrid approach will make longer‑range forecasts as accurate (or even more accurate) than shorter‑range ones. They also say AI could help warn of an impending storm up to 24 hours earlier. It’s all about the data!

So no, it’s not all AI predicting the weather. Meteorologists will still be studying the weather, just with the help of AI. They still have the important and challenging job of interpreting the data and communicating that to the public. It will be interesting to see if there’s a noticeable difference.

This is all supposed to kick off this spring.
