Hurricane Season Officially Begins Today

June 1st marks the official start of Atlantic hurricane season.

Now, before anybody starts boarding up windows, it’s worth remembering that most tropical activity doesn’t typically ramp up until later in the summer. Historically, August, September, and early October are when the Atlantic Ocean tends to be at its warmest and conditions become most favorable for tropical storms and hurricanes to develop.

Still, today is an important date for meteorologists across North America because it’s the day hurricane forecasting officially shifts into high gear.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th and covers a massive area stretching from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico all the way up the eastern coast of North America.

For Atlantic Canadians, hurricanes can sometimes feel like something that only affects warmer destinations further south. But history tells a different story.

Over the years, Atlantic Canada has experienced several significant storms, including Hurricane Juan in 2003, which made landfall near Halifax and remains one of the most damaging storms in Nova Scotia history. More recently, Hurricane Fiona in 2022 caused widespread damage across the region, reminding everyone that powerful tropical systems can still have major impacts by the time they reach Canadian waters.

One interesting fact about hurricanes is that the names are planned years in advance. The World Meteorological Organization maintains rotating lists of storm names, and particularly destructive storms often have their names permanently retired. That’s why you’ll never see another Hurricane Fiona or Hurricane Juan.

Modern forecasting has also improved dramatically. Meteorologists can often track tropical disturbances days before they develop into storms, giving communities much more time to prepare than previous generations ever had.

The good news is that most years pass without major impacts for Atlantic Canada. But June 1st serves as a reminder that we’re entering a season where weather becomes a little more unpredictable and where forecasters begin paying much closer attention to the tropics.

For now, it’s simply the start of a six-month period that weather experts will be watching very carefully.
