I Would Not Like It In A Box…

It really is amazing what you can find on the internet. Lots of things that you never really expected to find.

Yesteday, while scrolling through my news feed, I noticed a post with a recipe for raccoon. Now people eat lots of different things so it wasn’t a big surprise that people may eat a raccoon. The surprise was the number of recipes you can find to prepare one.

After seeing the one recipe, I decided to see how many more I could find. A very quick search gave me maple bourbon glazed raccoon, baked raccoon, barbecued raccoon, raccoons with stuffing, brined bandit with sweet potato, crock pot raccoon… the list went on. And on.

I’m okay with the concept of eating trash panda. I’m just not sure about actually doing it. If you really are what you eat, what does that make a raccoon? And sure, they may wash their hands a lot, but if someone in the neighbourhood is going to come down with rabies, it’s likely to be the critter in the mask. So if I was going to actually eat one, I would probably have to go with the maple bourbon recipe and really heavy on the bourbon.

I’m sure they’re quite tasty when properly prepared. I still don’t want to eat one.

The initial steps for preparation also seem a bit intimidating. Given all the snarling and showing of teeth that goes on when I even dare suggest that one leave my green bin, I can only imagine what would happen if I also suggested he crawl in my crock pot.

But on the up side,as I scrolled through the many tasty recipes for raccoon, I started to recite Doctor Suess. The words of the classic Green Eggs and Ham came back to me. All fifty of them. (Yes, there are only fifty words in the entire book. It was a dare.)

“I would not like it in a box, I would not like it with a fox”. Or maybe that should be with a side of fox?

So I really don’t want to try eating one. But if I just print off the recipes and leave them around my green bin, maybe it would keep them away?

Meanwhile, that recipe for porcupine meatballs looks interesting.
