Irish Roots in Atlantic Canada

When people think of Saint Patrick’s Day, they often picture celebrations in Ireland, but the truth is, some of the strongest Irish connections in the world exist right here in Atlantic Canada.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, waves of Irish immigrants made the difficult journey across the Atlantic, many fleeing hardship and famine, especially during the Great Irish Famine. They arrived in places like Nova ScotiaNewfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick, often with very little, but they brought their culture, language, music, and traditions with them.

Over time, those traditions didn’t just survive, they became part of the identity of the region.

In Cape Breton Island, for example, Irish and Scottish influences blended into what’s now known as the world-famous Cape Breton fiddle style. It’s a sound that’s deeply rooted in Celtic tradition, fast-paced, emotional, and still performed at kitchens, halls, and festivals across the island today.

And it’s not just the music. You can hear Irish influence in the way people speak, in the storytelling culture that’s still strong in coastal communities, and in the sense of humour and resilience that’s often passed down through generations.

Places like St. John’s have particularly deep Irish ties, so much so that parts of Newfoundland were once described as being more Irish than Ireland itself. Even today, many family names, accents, and traditions trace directly back to counties in Ireland.

So when March 17th rolls around, Saint Patrick’s Day hits a little differently here.

It’s not just about wearing green or celebrating for the day, for many people in Atlantic Canada, it’s about heritage. It’s about remembering where their families came from, the journeys they made, and the traditions that are still alive generations later.

Around here, Irish culture isn’t just something we celebrate, it’s something we live.
