The Island Traps Schooners are hoping for lots of fan support as they host Provincials this weekend.
Clark’s Harbour’s F.A. Brannen Memorial Field will be the location, with games starting this afternoon at 4.
The team based out of Sherose Island just wrapped up their most successful season in the Nova Scotia Intermediate Baseball League, winning 15 games.
They fell in the playoffs to the Noel Road Blue Jays, but will hope for a Provincial title this weekend against teams from Truro, Hammonds Plains and Pictou.
Player and Team Organizer Keith Nickerson says a fourth place finish in the regular season has them feeling good heading into the tournament.
“Our pitching has been a huge upgrade this year. We got Tristan Reede from the Yarmouth Gateways and Shannon Smith has been great. We picked up Jeff Ross and Stefan Newell a couple of years ago. We’ve been adding guys that can play different positions and really help out the team. Our Head Coach Davis Nickerson has been there since the first day four years ago.”
The Schooners open play this afternoon at 4 against Hammonds Plains.
Nickerson says it should be a competitive event.
“I think we’ll have the hometown edge. Hopefully our fans can give us a boost. I expect good things as we look to win Provincials this year.”
Action continues tomorrow with the championship games on Sunday at 9am and 12pm, as the tournament is a double-knockout format.
