We are getting closer. It’s the first of December, which means it’s time for many people to break out the advent calendars.
For some, this is a long standing Christmas tradition. Although, to be honest I never really got the hang of it as a child, so it has never been a part of my traditions.
As the beginning of the liturgical year, advent does have a more serious side. But for children, it was more about the goodies hidden behind the doors in the advent calendar.
But some advent calendars are better than others. I believe some are made using leftover chocolate from the year before. The words leftover and chocolate never went together in my mind, but still, grabbing something from behind door number one that you were expecting to be a delicious treat only to find it stale and not tasting all that great was not a good experience. (Note: Do not buy advent calendars at Boxing Day sales and keep them for next year.)
Get a couple of stale or even just not so good quality treats, and the advent calendar can slip your mind pretty easy.
But there are other versions of the advent calendar. Some are more adult versions. Like there are beer and scotch versions. Probably others, maybe with your very own favourite kind of hootch. There are versions with toys in them, which are fun. There are lots of different ones. Many of them would seem to stray from the original idea of counting down the days at this time of year, but that’s okay, if it works for you.
