It’s Human Rights Day Across Canada

It’s Human Rights Day across the country.

Today marks 70 years since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This year Human Rights Day kicks-off a year-long campaign to mark it’s anniversary.

Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission CEO Christine Hanson was in Halifax on Friday to recognize youth, organizations and individuals from the province for their efforts.

She says it’s very important to work with youth because they see the need to continually fight for human rights.

“They are the future.”

“[But] we’ll never be satisfied. At this stage I think there is still a lot left to be done.”

The United Nations General Assembly adopted this day in 1948 to establish equal dignity and worth of every person.

It is also the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

Hanson says every human deserves to be treated equally.

She says the world has come a long way in 70 years but they’re still looking to do more.

“And it’s a work in progress, and I think we just have to continue to focus on the future,” says Hanson.

“And ways that we can continue to improve, and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity and equality in our society.”

Youth, Organizations and individuals received awards in Halifax on Friday for their contributions to making the world a better place.

Hanson helped hand out the awards, and Premier Stephen McNeil attended.
